Not many rivers have a festival. The Danube does. On June 29, people in more than ten countries mark Danube Day, a shared celebration of the river that ties Central and Eastern Europe together, with cook-offs and live music, photo contests and food along the banks. It is a fair question why one river earns all that, and the answer is a good introduction to the Danube itself.
At more than 1,700 miles, the Danube is Europe’s second-longest river, and it runs through ten countries, more than any river on earth. Four capitals stand on its banks, Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava and Belgrade, along with a long roll of older river towns, Regensburg and Linz, Vukovar and Novi Sad among them. Each capital keeps its own character, Vienna’s imperial calm, Budapest’s split of hill and river, Bratislava’s compact Old Town, Belgrade’s fortress over two rivers, and to cruise between them is to cross a continent’s worth of borders, languages and histories on a single current.
The Danube has pulled artists toward it for centuries. Beethoven and Mozart worked within reach of it, Klimt painted near it, and Johann Strauss the Younger, born in Vienna on the river itself, wrote The Blue Danube in 1866, the waltz that has carried the river’s name around the world ever since. The same valley that gave Europe that music also gave it Riesling and Sachertorte, and the castles and abbeys, Melk and Buda among them, built high to watch the water go by.
Danube Day is also a nod to the river as a working, living thing. More than five thousand plant and animal species depend on it, among them the white-tailed eagle and the pygmy cormorant, and around twenty million people draw their drinking water from it. Danube Day itself is a cheerful affair, less solemn commemoration than village fair: cook-offs and photo contests, live music and archery and horses along the banks, staged on the same day in more than ten countries at once so that a single river throws one very long party across a continent.
