Beyond Oktoberfest: Experience Bavaria's Beer Culture in Vilshofen and Munich

By AmaWaterways•August 2026•5 minute read

The first Oktoberfest was a wedding party. When Bavaria's Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese in October 1810, Munich was invited to a horse race in their honor. The race ended. The party did not.

That instinct, to turn a celebration into a season, spread well beyond that one wedding. Come autumn, Germany is dotted with Volksfeste, folk festivals built on the same basic ingredients: beer tents, oompah bands, pretzels, and crowds turned out in lederhosen and dirndls. Stuttgart throws its own version each year at the Cannstatter Wasen, one of the largest folk festivals in the country. Straubing, in eastern Bavaria, skips autumn entirely for its Gäubodenfest, timed for August so it beats both the crowds and the September chill. Two centuries on, though, one of these festivals eclipses all the rest: Munich's Oktoberfest, drawing around six million people a year as the largest folk festival on Earth.

AmaWaterways' Own Oktoberfest, No Crowds Required

When you cruise the Danube River with us, you don't have to wait for September to get a night of celebration. In the small Bavarian town of Vilshofen, AmaWaterways stages its own Oktoberfest the evening the ship docks, whatever the season. A local Beer Queen presides over the festivities as Bavarian beer, and non-alcoholic alternatives, get poured, warm pretzels come around the room, and a band in lederhosen and dirndls plays until someone talks the crowd into a few steps of the Schuhplattler, the thigh-slapping folk dance the region is known for.

Vilshofen is a fitting host for it. The town sits where three rivers meet, a cluster of pastel houses strung along one long market street, the kind of place that empties into a single square the moment something's happening. On an Oktoberfest night, that square is the party, close enough to the water that the music carries out over the docked ship.

Cruise in late spring, and you may catch something rarer. Every May 1st, Bavarian villages raise a Maypole, a tall pine trunk stripped bare and painted in the region's blue and white, then dance beneath it well into the night. The rivalry that comes with it is real: neighboring villages steal one another's poles and hold them for ransom, and in 2004, one was famously carried off by helicopter. Vilshofen now raises a maypole of its own for AmaWaterways guests, a young tradition built on a very old template.

It's proof that Bavaria's best traditions don't need a festival calendar to show up, they just need the right town, and the right welcome. Munich, it turns out, works the same way.

Why Munich Outside Oktoberfest Season Might Be Better

There's a version of Munich that has nothing to do with tents or crowds or a fairground stretching to the horizon, and it might be the version better suited to your travel style. Skip the festival dates, and you'll find a city not performing Bavaria for six million visitors, but simply living it: a Maß set down in front of you without a wait, a table under the chestnut trees with room to actually sit, a bartender with time to talk.

The beer, at least, never takes a season off. Munich's six great breweries, Augustiner, brewing since 1328 and still the oldest in town, along with Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, Spaten and Hacker-Pschorr, pour year-round, festival or not. At the Chinesischer Turm, the pagoda-topped beer garden tucked into the English Garden, locals still claim the good tables under the trees on a Tuesday afternoon in April with the same ease they would in late September. At Viktualienmarkt, Munich's produce market threads its stalls of pretzels and cheese wheels around a beer garden that's been serving the neighborhood, tourists included, for longer than anyone working there can quite explain.

That's the Munich our two-night land package before your cruise opens up: an arrival evening to get lost in without any particular plan, a full day threading through the Old Town toward the Glockenspiel's mechanical chime and the onion domes of the Frauenkirche, and an afternoon that inevitably, correctly, ends at a beer hall table with a pretzel the size of a dinner plate. Call it gemütlichkeit, the particular Bavarian talent for making an afternoon disappear over good beer and better company, or just call it a warm-up. From there, you’ll transfer to Vilshofen to board the ship, where the first night's Oktoberfest celebration, live music, dancing, another round of Bavarian beer, picks up a party Bavaria never really stopped throwing in the first place.
