AmaWaterways keeps your journey moving despite historically low water levels

Europe's rivers are experiencing historically low water levels this summer. A hot, dry stretch has pulled water levels down across the Danube, Rhine and Main rivers, and if you have a 2026 sailing booked, you've likely seen the headlines and wondered what they mean for your trip.

Here's the short answer: your journey is still on course.

When conditions shift in ways nobody can control, our role is to ensure your experience continues seamlessly. That's exactly what we're doing.

It’s been an exceptionally dry summer in Europe, and the river levels are showing the effects of the lack of rain. The Danube in Romania has dropped to its lowest point in about thirty years, and the Rhine, the Main and the upper Danube are all running below seasonal norms. When water levels reach certain thresholds, ships can no longer navigate portions of a river safely.

These conditions are uncommon, but they aren’t unprecedented. Similar challenges occurred in 2018 and again in 2022, and our experienced operations team is well prepared to manage them, monitoring conditions continuously and evaluating every adjustment carefully.

Our ships are designed for these rivers. Their innovative design allows them to continue sailing in shallower conditions that can restrict other vessels, extending our access to waterways where other ships may be unable to operate.

When a section of river drops below what's safe to operate, we use a sister-ship swap: two of our ships operate the same river from opposite ends, and guests transfer from one to the other during a scheduled onshore experience with luggage already waiting in the matching cabin when you return. You keep going, and the low water never becomes your problem. We plan around each river's character, too. The Danube runs through a series of dams that hold its levels steadier, while the Rhine has none, so we route and plan with that difference in mind.

Some situations call for more than a swap, and that's where we get creative. When a normal route isn't possible, we build a new one, designing fresh, exclusive itineraries for the affected routes, so a low river turns into a new adventure rather than a cancelled one. That might mean reversing a course, adding a night in a city worth more of your time, running a motorcoach leg to reach a town the ship can't, or putting together an entirely new itinerary for that sailing. The goal never changes. You see the places you came for, and you come home with a trip worth talking about, not one you settled for.

Resilience is core to who we are. Instead of pausing sailings when water levels drop, we adapt. Swapping ships, rerouting, building new itineraries on short notice – everything we do exists so that low water never has to mean a cancelled cruise. Adapting takes more work than stepping back, but we believe it’s what our guests deserve, and it’s why we haven’t canceled a single departure due to this summer’s conditions.

We’re watching the water levels continuously and will reach out to you and your travel advisor with any changes that impact your itinerary. If a change touches your journey, we'll reach you or your travel advisor first, before it affects your day. Already booked?

At a minimum, 14 days prior to embarkation, AmaWaterways will email you and/or your travel advisor with an update specific to your sailing, including whether current river conditions are expected to impact your itinerary.

For example:

• Guests embarking on September 30, 2026 can expect an update no later than September 16, 2026
• Guests embarking on September 20, 2026 can expect an update no later than September 6, 2026
• Guests embarking on September 15, 2026 can expect an update no later than September 1, 2026

While river conditions can change quickly and long-range forecasts are not always reliable, our goal is to provide the most accurate information available at the earliest practical time. If significant developments occur before the 14-day mark, we'll communicate those updates sooner whenever possible.
