This Simple Cocktail Is an Onboard Favorite

When you think of a lemon, you may picture it as a simple citrusy ingredient that can be used to add a subtle sweetness to a dish or to brighten up your day with a refreshing glass of lemonade. However, the history behind lemons is far from simple. Surprisingly, the true origin of the lemon is still shrouded in mystery. It is long believed that the lemon originated from northwestern India, but science can only determine this based on following the fruit’s growth in popularity across the Middle East and neighboring countries nestled along the Mediterranean. In the 2nd century, Arab traders brought lemons to Italy, making it the first European country to embrace the vibrant yellow fruit.

Today, lemons in Europe are largely grown in Portugal and Spain with a wide range of uses. From a simple ingredient to enhance flavor to a base for natural remedies, and of course, Lemon Drop Martinis, the fruit has been a favorite around the globe for centuries. You can enjoy a simple yet refreshing cocktail by following our Lemon Drop Martini recipe or ordering it on any one of our beautiful river cruises during our daily complimentary Sip & Sail cocktail hour. In fact, our Co-Founder and Executive Vice President, Kristin Karst, often enjoys a Lemon Drop Martini while visiting our ships, and it is also quite popular with our guests.
