Avid golfer Jill K. was thrilled when she discovered AmaWaterways’ exclusive Concierge Golf Program while researching a way to combine her family’s favorite pastime with a travel experience suitable for two generations. We asked her a few questions about what makes this first-of-its-kind program so special.

Where did you first hear about our Concierge Golf Program?
My husband, my mom and I all enjoy golf. My mom had done river cruising before and really enjoyed it. We thought, since she was about 83 at the time, that for mobility reasons, it would be great if we could go do a cruise together and include golf in the experience. We Googled “river cruising and golf.” Your website had everything: we looked at the schedule offered on the Danube River, researched the courses, and the ship, AmaMagna, was pretty special.
What sold you on combining river cruising and golf with AmaWaterways?
My mom had always done larger cruises, which didn’t really appeal to Todd and I because of the amount of people. I liked the river cruise for the size, and being up and close to everything, not having to jump on and off and stay at hotels along the way. We were able to see five different countries, and it was ideal not having to organize all of the travel details ourselves. Coordinating this separately would have been way out of our range, so to have it all packaged together with the golf and the sites was really amazing.
Was there one golf course you were most looking forward to playing on?
The Penati Legend Course, designed by Nicklaus Design, piqued our interest. The other course we were excited to play was the Adamstal in Austria. We were looking forward to the foothills, the golf, the scenery and the large expansive views. We also liked the idea of being able to say we were able to golf in five different countries!
Describe one of your days golfing during the cruise.
We loved having our “special” days when we were able to leave the group. It was such an intimate, individualized program. Nicholas from LGT Golf was always waiting for us at the entrance to the ship with a smile. Our equipment was organized and ready and in his Mercedes van which was fabulous. Nicholas would point out sites we saw along the way, so driving to the courses was fun and educational. When we arrived, Nicholas took all our bags, we’d put on our golf shoes, get our tokens for the driving range and could practice before we started our round. Nicholas joined us on the course and his guidance was really helpful. What was really unique was that every course’s set-up for lunch was different. One of the courses in Germany had a pretty courtyard dining venue with lovely tables where we had Wiener schnitzel and German beer. The Kogo Restaurant at the Albatross Golf Course in Prague was on the upper level with a large terrace overlooking the course. We were never in a rush, so we could always look in the pro shop or have an extra drink. It felt really special to be able to break away from the ship and have that experience. And we still keep in touch with Nicholas!

Were there any standout moments on the courses?
The Golf Club Adamstal was the most impressive landscape. The terrain, rock formations and expansive views were stunning. After 9 holes, we enjoyed a beer and charcuterie board high in the hills on the course. The course is well maintained, peaceful and a pure golf experience.
What was the best part of your experience?
The best part of our experience was the variety and diversity in the golf courses and the AmaMagna ship. After a day of golf, we would enjoy a drink in the library and recount our day. Nicholas provided a complete experience, handling all the details. AmaWaterways provided amazing accommodations, excellent service, food and interesting excursions. It was a true vacation for us. All of the golf arrangements and the cruise exceeded our expectations.
AmaWaterways’ Concierge Golf Program is available on select Magna on the Danube sailings and is debuting on our Impressions of the Seine & Paris itinerary beginning in 2026.
