Starting the Season on an Active, Healthy Note

We have had an absolutely tremendous start to 2016 as we prepare for this year’s exciting cruise season. Looking to the future, it’s going to be a very active year for us – in more ways than one! We recently were honored with the 2015 Cruise Critic Editors’ Award for “Best River Cruise Line for Active Cruisers.” Not only does this award strengthen our position as a leader in active travel, but it shows true commitment and passion from the whole AmaWaterways team.

Personally, one of my favorite ways to see a new city is by bike, and we wanted to bring this experience to our guests. We are thrilled to bring to life our industry-leading novelty of offering complimentary bicycles onboard our European river cruises this year! Our interest in active travel led to a great collaboration with Backroads, a popular adventure bike tour company that will take their expertise and host onshore excursions during several of our cruises.

Some of the bicycling excursions I plan to participate in include a tour of the historic waterfront town of Willemstad, cycling along the river Sava and through Kalemegdan Park in Belgrade, and a ride through the Wachau Valley along the Danube. Whether exploring the cities with your family and friends, or in small guided groups – bicycle is definitely the way to go!

Our exciting new hiking tours are also making their way to many of our itineraries this year, including a trek up to Durnstein Fortress, followed by a local wine tasting. Can you imagine anything better than an active hike with a wine tasting in a charming historic town? Other options include Fourviere Hill in Lyon, Passau Castle, Mount Pipet in Vienne and Chateau Gaillard in Les Andelys – all offering breathtaking views.

Guided biking and hiking tours are included in our cruise fare, in addition to other tours that are often offered at a variety of paces. I hear so often that these options set us apart and help travelers sailing with AmaWaterways to have a truly pleasurable and immersive experience. Also included are Limited Edition Tours that give smaller groups unique opportunities to experience local culture – for example, a Belgian waffle and chocolate tasting in Antwerp, or a special tour of Vienna’s hidden gems. They’re a blast!

While last year was lovely, I must say that 2016 is already looking as good if not better! I am ready to get out, get active and start traveling to some spectacular destinations. I hope to see you all along the way!
