A Different View of Chobe: Meeting the Wildlife From the River

See Chobe National Park from the water aboard AmaWaterways’ Zambezi Queen, where guided river safaris, private balconies and all-suite comfort bring Africa’s wildlife naturally into view.

By AmaWaterways•August 2026•< 5 mins

Most people meet Chobe National Park from the back of a Land Cruiser, engine ticking, dust rising off the track. See it instead from the deck of AmaWaterways’ Zambezi Queen, and the park reorganizes itself. From the water, you step into a different rhythm of life.

A gathering point that shifts with the season

The Chobe runs along the park’s northern edge, and it is less a boundary than a magnet. What pulls the wildlife to it changes through the year. From April to November, the dry months, the inland pans and waterholes give out and the river becomes the only reliable water for miles, so the animals come for sustenance. The banks fill over a single afternoon: elephant herds shouldering down to drink, buffalo in the hundreds, lechwe stepping through the shallows while lions wait in the grass behind them. When the rains arrive, the river changes its job. It spreads into the floodplains, the game scatters across new grazing, and the channels fill with birds as residents nest and migrants arrive on the water. The same river that concentrates the wildlife in one season disperses it in the next.

Guided boat safaris that bring you close

That is exactly what Zambezi Queen’s guided boat safaris are for. Twice a day, morning and afternoon, small tenders push off for two or three hours with a guide who knows the water. Sitting a few feet above the surface, you get closer than any road allows. The guide cuts the motor and the tender drifts within a safe distance of a pod of hippos, but near enough to feel their grunts in your chest. A herd crosses ahead between two islands, calves kept to the middle. The Chobe is as much a bird river as a big-game one, and from that low angle you learn to tell a fish eagle from a tawny eagle and to pick out the black heron where it fishes beneath a hood of its own wings. Each tender carries a cooler of refreshments for you to enjoy, and on the morning run you can put a line in for tiger fish. No game drive gets you this close, this quietly.

All day, the action comes to you

The wildlife does not clock off when the tenders come in, and the viewing does not either. Every stateroom on Zambezi Queen is a suite of 215 to 300 square feet, with a private balcony, floor-to-ceiling windows and climate control, so the river stays in front of you whether you are on deck or resting in your room. The lounge, the bar and the shaded top deck all face the same water, and the ship is small enough to tuck into the narrow channels where the game gathers. Lunch can pass with a breeding herd filing down to drink off the bow, and a slow hour on the balcony before breakfast can turn up more than a full morning elsewhere. That is the rhythm here. The action comes to you.

Seen from the road, Chobe is somewhere you pass through. Seen from Zambezi Queen, it is somewhere you live alongside for a few days, down at the level of the water, on the animals’ terms. That shift in perspective, more than any single sighting, is what stays with you.
