Bordeaux dresses for Christmas with a wine city's sense of style. Through December, the streets are strung with lights modeled on theater chandeliers, and the smell of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine, or vin chaud, drifts across squares better known for their estates than their holidays, at least until now. The Allées de Tourny market
The largest of the city's markets sets up along the Allées de Tourny, more than a hundred wooden chalets selling local crafts, food and entertainment. Carol singers and stilt walkers move between the stalls, and a carousel spins across from the Grand Théâtre. Look for canelés, the city's signature pastry, dark and caramelized outside, soft with vanilla and rum within, alongside jars of local honey, pungent Basque cheeses, and an array of mulled wine options. This is the place to find scented candles, ornaments and regional produce in one long, lit promenade, and to take the measure of how a French wine capital does Christmas.
A smaller, artier market too
On select December weekends, the Darwin XMAS Market opens as the counterpoint, a smaller gathering of eco-conscious local makers and independent creators, with food trucks and live music filling the evenings. Set inside Bordeaux's Darwin quarter, a converted military site turned into a hub for local artists and startups, it offers the kind of one-off, handmade souvenirs the big market doesn't, and a younger, looser atmosphere alongside it. Between the two, the city covers both the grand and the offbeat.
Why go in December
Bordeaux in summer is vineyards and tastings; Bordeaux in December is glowing chalets on wet cobblestones, freshly prepared savory or sweet crêpes that delight, and cheer-filled groups of visitors and locals moving together through the square.
