Exclusive Wine Cruise Romantic Danube Mar 29 - Apr 5, 2019

Hosted by Jim & Kathleen Young, Owner & CEO, Robert Young Estate Winery, Geyserville, CA

Jim is a fourth-generation farmer with a strong work ethic and integrity learned from a lifetime of experience on the family land. The oldest son of Robert and Gertrude, his courage and curiosity led him to the University of California, Davis where he graduated with a BS degree in plant science with a specialty in viticulture and extensive course work completed in enology. His first wine, made in 1978, was awarded Sweepstakes in the amateur category of the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, and in 1989 he was honored in being selected as Outstanding Young Farmer. Patience, compassion, understanding, kindness, and meticulous attention to detail guide Jim as CEO and Vineyard Manager of the family businesses. In maintaining the legacy of the land, Jim understands that sustainability must continue to be at the root of all farming practices and all enduring relationships with his generational vineyard and winery team. Jim learned early on that a farmer’s footprints are the best fertilizer. Thousands of steps every day ensure his promise to preserve this land for generations to come.

Tell us something special about yourself that would make someone unfamiliar with you want to travel with you on this river cruise.

Jim has been growing grapes at Robert Young Vineyards since his graduation from UC Davis in 1975. He first worked alongside his father; renowned grower Robert Young, originally learning the hands-on skills Robert had learned from his years of growing and then implementing his own techniques of hybrid trellising, selected root stock and clonal selections. Jim has become a very highly respected grape grower and is considered one of the premier experts in the field. Kathleen is an accomplished gardener and chef and has been skillfully paring Sonoma County culinary delights with wine for many years. Her recipes have been featured in regional magazines and are a mainstay at their 5-star rated bed & breakfast – Kelley & Young Wine Garden Inn

What was your “Aha Moment” when you fell in love with wine?

Jim – “It was probably 1972 when I tasted a 1969 Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon. It was perfect with velvety tannins and balanced acidity.” Kathleen – “Right after college I had a roommate whose Mom offered me a glass of chardonnay at dinner one night, I was reluctant but when I tasted the wine with the food I was stunned. The wine and food were not only both delicious, but they complimented each other and made the pairing even better. From that moment forward I was fascinated by how wine changes the food we eat.”

What is one thing you are most looking forward to on your river cruise?

Meeting new people who love food and wine.

What is something fun/unique you wish to share—perhaps something nobody knows until now?

Jim won the Sonoma County Harvest Fair Amateur Sweepstakes Award in 1978 with the first wines he ever made. Kathleen is a hobbyist rosarian and has over 100 different roses in her garden.

What is one of the most interesting places you have traveled to and why?

So many it’s hard to choose; but we love France, Spain and Italy because of their wonderful wines and food.

If you were stranded on a desert island, and could only have one bottle of wine, what would it be and why?

One bottle? “IDK – I’d have to say since it’s a desert island, I’d have to choose a Sauvignon Blanc because its hot and I’m thirsty – KKY.” “Jim would choose a chardonnay.”

About the Wine Region – Wachau Valley

Brilliant architectural masterpieces and vine-strung hillsides on the Danube River have inspired artistic creations for hundreds of years. The Romantic Danube journeys through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, so you can experience some of the most celebrated wines and sights in Europe’s heartland.

Over 3,700 acres of terraced vineyards rise from Austria’s illustrious Wachau Valley. Located between the towns of Melk and Krems, this cooler-climate wine region brings a wide variety of refreshing, peppery white-grape wines to fruition. Grüner Veltliner is considered to be the most important grape in Austria. Grown in loess soils by the river’s edge, these favored wines offer aromatic stone fruit flavors reminiscent of the terroir. Riesling, the second most popular grape, loves rocky inclines, so it is extensively sewn into the rich hillside. Fruity notes and floral scents surface from these unique whites.
