Summary of Excursion

As an alternative to the walking tour of Durnstein, the more active guest may choose to venture high above the town for a visit to the majestic ruins of Kuenringer Castle, or “Duerrstein” (‘dry stone’) castle from which Durnstein derives its name. Steeped with history, Richard the Lionheart, King of England, was imprisoned here in 1192 following the Third Crusade and it was later nearly completely destroyed by the troops of the Swedish Empire in 1645. Now a series of ruins, the peaks and former parapets of this once grand castle now afford magnificent views over the Danube River and surrounding vineyards of the Wachau Valley, and provide ample opportunity and inspiration for the budding photographer. As you descend the wooded, winding path you will encounter Durnstein’s vibrant medieval cemetery, complete with a glimpse into the unique charnel house, or bone room. Following the tour, you will have opportunity for some free time to explore Durnstein on your own, or may choose to join your fellow guests for a special wine tasting at Durnstein Abbey before returning to the ship.
